WITH DR JILLIAN MURPHY

There’s this definition of window of attractiveness that most of us are trying to attain, that is not healthy or attainable for the majority of the population. And the way I usually get people to take that in is to understand there is a social privilege associated with maintaining that ideal body type and shape. And it’s a privilege, and there is social status associated with it because by definition it is difficult to achieve. If everybody could be that size and shape, it would stop holding status.

About This Episode:

Now more than ever we're completely obsessed with our bodies, and the food that we’re eating. The truth is that a majority of people would say they don’t like the way they look. I know I’ve said that about myself many times throughout my life. But what might surprise you to learn is that there’s a highly idealized view of health and body type and that it’s an expensive classist system that only the privileged have access to. During this episode, I’m chatting with Dr. Jillian Murphy about what social privilege has to do with our health, and how we can start to make peace with our bodies.
